Some advantages the English saw establishing colonies in the New World were:

The people that came to the New World were aiming to exercise their religion freely. In Europe, people needed to follow whichever religion was established by the government. Freedom of religion represented an advantage for the English that settled in the New World. Despite harsh weather conditions, the New World presented England with new products that could be profitable for trade. Things like potatoes and corn were unknown foods to Europeans. Having control over a bigger extension of land gave England better opportunities in a mercantilist world. In that time the world was moved by commerce, and the New World represented a land from which to extract more products. This allowed England to have higher profits.
