    The Agreement of 1850 was reckoned to resolve the dilemma within North and South and to determine what to do with the new areas acquired in the Mexican-American War: California would be consolidated as a sovereign state, and Texas would have a slavery-based code.

    The North did not encourage bondage and considered in administering the union equally due to their majority. However, the South was struggling for a limited centralized administration so the individual state would be able to administer itself.
