Shirley Chisholm, was the first African American woman to serve in the Congress. She was elected in 1968 and represented New York in the House of Representatives. She was also the first black woman to run for president in 1972, although her campaign was unsuccessful. She has a long and respectable career, serving seven mandates in the Congress.
