There were many social effects. There was a huge labor shortage, so serfs and other workers benefited greatly if they survived. They were able to make a choice of whom to work for, and Lords had to make conditions better and more attractive, such as increasing wage or else their land would be left unattended.

The Catholic Church took a heavy toll as well. People began to distrust the church and God because they realized that religion could do nothing to stop the spread of disease and their loved ones suffering. So many priests died that church services could not happen in many areas.

Jewish populations were also targeting as scapegoats. They were blamed for the Black Death, as the Jewish population did not suffer as high of a mortality rate. Historians now attribute this to better hygiene, but many people accused them of poisoning the water instead. This prejudice resulted in many Jews fleeing to Poland and Russia.
