    The right answer is D. Alexander Hamilton's primary rival was Thomas Jefferson. Even though they got along relatively well at the beginning of the term, they soon became fierce enemies. Their personalities were opposed and they both thought that theirs (Jefferson was Secretary of State and Hamilton was Secretary of the Treasury) was the most important job within Washington's cabinet.
