How did the practice of trench warfare lead to a stalemate

    Trench warfare did not lead to a stalemate in World War I. The machine gun did. The machine gun turned the advantage in warfare at the time to the defensive. Machine guns at the time were large and heavy making them unsuitable to be carried by foot soldiers for offensive operations over rough ground.
