    Deceased

    Explanation:

The slaves were transported in the basements of ships where they were confined to journeys that could last for months, until arrival at destination

They were forcibly embarked and imprisoned in basements that barely allowed them to remain seated. The enslaved Africans were kept naked, separated by gender and the men remained chained in order to avoid riots. The women, however, suffered sexual violence from the crew.

It is estimated that from 1525 to 1866 12.5 million individuals (an estimated 26% were still children) were transported as merchandise to American ports. Of these, about 12.5% (1.6 million) did not survive the trip and arrived in America deceased. The main causes of death were related to gastrointestinal problems, scurvy and infectious diseases caused by the poor hygiene conditions they were subjected to.
