Preston Brooks was a representative from South Carolina in the House of Representatives. On May 22, 1856, he entered the chamber of the Senate and beat senator Charles Sumner bloody, the Senate leader of the anti-slavery faction, with his cane. This was called ironically "an act of Southern chivalry" by the Washington press.
