Watergate caused many Americans to become distrustful of government leaders and politicians.

    Explanation:

Richard Nixon had campaigned on a slogan of "Bring us together" and many Americans had great hope of that, especially after the racial turmoil and assignations that had rocked the nation in the years leading up to his election. As the story came out about the break-in to an office used by the Democratic Party an the Watergate Hotel by operatives attempting to gain secret information to be used for the Nixon campaign- - and the attempts by government officials and President Nixon to cover up and destroy the evidence, it cast doubt upon the integrity of those we trusted to lead our nation, and the entire political process.
