Due to the stories in the Vedas, scholars know that the Indo-Aryans first lived as nomadic herders, although they later survived as agricultors.

The Vedas are the oldest Indian sacred writings. They were written in Sanskrit and are believed to date from 1800 BCE to 800 BCE. These texts contain evidence regarding how the primitive Indo-Aryans used to live and scholars using these sources know that they were initially semi nomadic and herders but later they developed agricultural methods.
