Why were real companies in a hurry to complete many miles of track laying in the mid-1800s?

The rail companies were in a hurry to complete track laying in the mid-1860s because they wanted to connect the Union to California which was experiencing rapid growth which was largely due to the California Gold Rush which had seen many people move to California.
