The Cherokee nation agreed to white settler grazing arrangement in order to get rent due from the land, for a period of five years. the white settlers agreed to buy the land at three dollars per acre, and the Cherokee refused asking instead for higher rent fee, which congress refused to ratify, putting a price of 1.25$ per acre, and forbidding grazing to the extent that the land value diminished. the strip was later opened for non-indian settlement in 1893.
