In Virginia and Maryland, a quasi-feudal system was created in which land was considered the property of the English lord who ruled it.

New York and Pennsylvania were tolerant of representative forms of government.

One of the differences between the economy of the British colonies in the Chesapeake regions and that of the middle regions is that the economy of the Chesapeake regions was strongly based on cash crops such as tobacco. Their economy was labor intensive and slaves provided this. Major cities were Virginia and Maryland.

The middle colonies did not really rely on slavery because their economy was grain based and not labour intensive, so slaves were not required. They had a more industrialized economy with major cities as New York and Philadelphia.
