When Jimmy Carter started his presidential race in 1976 America had passed by Vietnam and Watergate scandal and the public was tired of being lied to. The public had lost confidence in the government and they wanted candidates that were not from the Washington politics.

Carter noticed that and based his campaign in the slogan "A Leader, For A Change". He showed himself to the public as an outsider and promised to never lie to the public and "clean politics".
