    There are many

    Explanation:

There are many risks that slaves took to achieve their freedom,

while they of course risked being sentenced to jail time, African American slaves were more prone to harsher punishments than any other race. So many of them were sentenced to death if caught rebelling or trying to escape.

Slave masters had many other, crueler, means of punishment as well.
