Who contributed the idea of checks and balances?

    There was never a sole person who contributed to this idea, but James Madison pushed it further than anyone else. James believed that the oppression of the central government would be prevented, along with tyranny, by "checking" it authoritarian branches (i. e legislative and judicial branches).
