The split between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church is known as the East-West Schism or the Great Schism. It was the culmination in 1054 of several differences in cult that had developed over the previous centuries.

One of the most significant ones was the different views each church had in regards to the figure of the Pope. The Roman Catholic church views the Pope as the leading figure in Christianity, with its holy center located in Rome. On the other hand, Eastern orthodox churches highlight the collegiality of bishops, and it is structured more in the form of a Confederacy. This is a significant difference that is maintained to this day between the two churches.
