    The 1580 pandemic began in Asia during the summer, and then spread to Africa and Europe. Within six months, influenza had spread from southern Europe all the way to the northern European countries, and the infection subsequently reached the Americas

    The first real evidence of influenza (the flu) came about in 1580 - it started in Russia and sweeps through to Western Europe and Africa. In Rome it killed over 8,000 and almost destroyed several Spanish cities. One famous breakout of the influenza virus happened in 1918 and lasted to 1919.
