The outcome of the French Revolution, which started in 1789, resulted in the overthrow of the ruling monarchy of King Louis XVI in 1792. The revolutionary movement installed a De-Facto government which ordered the execution of the monarch, his family members and many of his associates.

These events led to the establishment of the Republic of France on the 22nd of September of 1792 and subsequent dictatorship of Napoleon in 1804.

Prior to the revolution, there was a large increase of discontent among the population of France, as the Monarchy was being accused of mismanaging the kingdom's resources in order to fund its opulent lifestyle at the expense of the vast working class majorities. This caused the insurrection and later revolution, which led to the creation of a new form of government.
