What caused the Spanish Civil War to break out?

The Spanish Civil War was caused by increased political polarization between the left and right wing parties. The liberal l middle classes sought to modernize Spain and turn it into a democratic state that can prosper in the 20th century. The conservative nationalists represented by the Church, military and rich landowners sought a return to the glory of the Golden Ages of sixteenth century where Spain was a monarchy. This division led to political tension and ultimately a civil war

The rebels termed themselves as Nationalists and mounted a savage repression of their own, which was more concerted and effective than that of the Republicans and eventually claimed more victims
