How did many Europeans justify their enslavement of Africans?

    that if a slave was non-Christian, then slaveholders were civilizing and Christianizing" them for their own benefit. And slaveholders were upholding their God-given position as Christians to enslave pagans and infidels. It was all a part of God's plan.
