    It's role cannot be over emphasized but it played a very important role especially due to it's cheapness and other qualities.

    Explanation:

    Britain led the world's Industrial Revolution with its early commitment to coal mining, steam power, textile mills, machinery, railways, and shipbuilding. Britain's demand for iron and steel, combined with ample capital and energetic entrepreneurs, made it the world leader in the first half of the 19th century.

    Steel was important to the second Industrial Revolution because it was a better material to use then iron. Steel is lighter, cheaper and stronger than iron, making it ideal for all sorts of purposes.
