US publications followed closely the events surrounding the Cuban Independence War fought between the Spanish and Cubans, through which the latter tried to gain their independence.

When the USS Maine, a US vessel, was sunk in the Havana Port the Spanish were blamed for it. They were constantly portrayed as very cruel murderers by US newspapers and magazines, this is why the US public opinion very widely supported the intervention of the US in the conflict mentioned above. The US sided with Cuba against the Spanish and the conflict was renamed Spanish American war.
