    [14th amendment extended liberties and rights granted by the Bill of Rights to all born US citizens and former slaves!]

    The Bill of rights were originally added to protect an individual's rights against overpowerment by the government.

    The concern during the debate was that the proposed changes did not securely protect the rights and liberties of an individual. The Bill of rights was to calm these fears of individuals rights and smooth their process out forthe states.
