    Japan had set its sights on numerous territories in Asia during the first half of the 20th century. The main reason for this were the natural resources. Japan lacked natural resources, while the surrounding places had them in abundance. In order to develop further economically and military, Japan needed lot of natural resources at disposal, thus it started to attack and invade new territories in Asia. When Southeast Asia fell under control of the Empire of Japan, all territory controlled by the empire accounted for 1,984,000 square km.
