One of the four basic principles of the 1628 Petition of Right was "Protection from arrest without cause".

The Petition of Right was a petition from the English Parliament to King Charles I, to put a halt on his abuses of power. One of its provisions included protecting people from arrest without a just cause. The other three provisions were that no taxation would be imposed without the consent of Parliament, no subject had to provide living quarters to soldiers and no martial law should be enacted in peacetime.
