Electoral votes are votes emitted by members of an electoral college. After the majority of voters in one state have decided upon one presidential candidate, a certain number of votes from the members of the electoral college are assigned to that candidate. A presidential candidate needs 270 votes in order to be proclaimed president of the United States.

The electoral college operates under the belief that its system is the best way to represent the national decisiveness of popular opinion of the citizens of the country.
