What was the wealth of Haiti based on in the 18th and 19th century?

    During the 18th and 19th century Haiti was the main producer of coffee of the world; it also produced very important amounts of sugar. Both productions were based in slavery. The very hard conditions of the plantations brought high death rates within slaves, accounting for the continuous importation of more slaves from Africa.
