The year 1968 was a turbulent one. Describe the events of 1968, both domestically and globally, and their significance in both the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement.

    The year 1968 was marked by several major historical events and was one of the most turbulent years of the 20th century in the United States. The two major events in the year 1968 were 1) the assassination of Martin Luther King 2) the US getting involved in the Vietnam war.

    Martin Luther King was assassinated by a white supremacist, in Memphis. This led to countrywide protests and riots killing 40 people and generating racial tensions between whites and blacks. After this Civil rights act was passed by President John F Kennedy. It was the main event on the domestic front.

    In January, the United States got involved in the Vietnam War when the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces launched attacks on Saigon and other targets in South Vietnam. On February 18, It was announced by the state department that more than 540 Americans had been killed and 2500 injured. This was a challenge for the US on the international front. Later this would give rise to protest against the Vietnam war.

    In March president Lyndon B Johnson in the Democratic presidential primary, President Lyndon B Johnson is defeated by Eugene McCarthy with 230 votes. The LBJ's administration became unpopular due to involvement in the Vietnam war.

    The assassination of Robert F Kennedy was also was the key event that shook the United States. He was shot by a young Jordanian.

    Apart from these Students protest in April, the opening of Chicago Democratic convention and Apollo 8 Orbiting the moon were other events of 1968.
