The Missouri Compromise was an effort to balance the power between slave and free states in Congress. The law admitted Maine into the union as a free state and admitted Missouri as a slave state. With the exception of Missouri, it prohibited slavery north of the 36°'30 latitude line. It has passed in 1820 but repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854.
