The normalization of relations between FRG and Eastern Europe during 1969-89 is known as Ostpolitic. Willy Brandt, chancellor of FRG and his adviser Egon Bahr were the key architects of this policy. The two major treaties during the Ostpolitic between FRG (Federal Republic of Germany) and the USSR were the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty in 1969 and the other treaty signed in 1970. Both these treaties were the basis of Ostpolitic as it opened the diplomatic relations and ruled out the use of force against each other. Under Ostpolitik Willy tried to improve the relations with East Germany while his predecessor Konrad Adenauer of Christian Democratic Union tried to combat the communists.
