    The Mughal Empire was located in South Asia, in what is now areas of Afghanistan, Kashmir, Bangladesh and India. The empire began in 1526 and lasted until the British Raj dissolved it in 1857. The empire was successful due to its efficient, centralized and standarized government. The majority of the population of the empire followed Sunni Islam, although freedom of religion and open debate was encouraged under the rule of Akbar.
