    The result of their becoming more confident in their ability to survive was that the colonies negotiated trade with Lousiana.

    Due to its location, it was a great river port, which paved the way for their trade. Soon, sugar cane and cotton plantations flourished and thrived.

    The territory first claimed by French expeditions changed over time, until it was surrendered to Britain, except for New Orleans. So, in a sense, the settlers' territory was actually reduced.
