    D) North Carolina's western lands became Tennessee.

    Explanation:

A part of present-day Tennessee, during the period of British colonization of the Thirteen Colonies, was part of the present state of North Carolina, and was easily the westernmost region of the former Thirteen British colonies.

After the recognition of the United States' independence from the United Kingdom in 1783, the inhabitants of the region began to demand the separation of the region of the present Tennessee from the rest of North Carolina. Thus, in 1796, Tennessee separated from North Carolina, becoming the 16th US state, on June 1, 1796.
