    James Curry had escaped slavery with his two brothers on June 14, 1837, but then become separated. In Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, a white man offered him work, but a black woman warned him not to stay with the man because of the risk of being carried back to a slave state. So he escaped and was taken in by Quakers in Philadelphia, where he worked till Christmas of 1837.
