before: many women fought for equal rights, such as the suffragettes

during: many women joined the war effort by becoming field nurses or if they stayed home, they took up the "man's" job and began to work outside of home

after: women didn't want to go back to being a domestic house wife, so against the messages in the media and men, women stayed at work and made up 1/3 of the peace time labor force
