    There were different types of slaves such as field workers and house slaves. Field workers were mainly required for sugar plantations in America. Most islands in the area consisted of a number of sugar cane fields where these slaves worked on the plantation and maintenance of the area. Most of the slaves were Negros belonging to Africa. By 1860, there were at least at least four million slaves being used as laborers for plantations. 60% of them mainly worked in cotton fields.
