    In the North, slavery had largely disappeared by the 1830s. Still, racial prejudice and discrimination remained. Few African Americans had the right to own property and vote.

    Most communities in the North did not allow African Americans to attend public schools. Many communities also kept them from using other public services. African Americans often had to attend poor-quality schools and go to hospitals that were reserved only for them.
