In her youth, she was included in Emperor Taizong of Tang harem, and after his death, she remained in the harem of the new emperor Tang Gaozong. In the year 654 she was named consort by the emperor, as consort she acquired greater power and after the emperor died in the year 683 her children Tang Zhong Zhong and Tang Ruizong were chosen as emperors, nevertheless, that was a period of transition to take over the power as the first and only female imperial empress in the China history.
