What was new about the writing system developed by the Phoenicians, and why was this important to the growth of knowledge and spread of ideas?

    -the alphabet was phonetic

    -the system was much easier/simple to learn, only 20 letters

    -because it was simple and easy to learn more people became literate (able to read and write)
