    in 1693 the governor of the colony upon hearing that his own wife was accused of witchcraft ordered an end to the trials.

    There are many reasons, the main reason being the accusations made were becoming too bold. During the beginning of the trials, people with little to no power were accused because it was harder for them to defend themselves.
