Cesar Chavez was an American labor leader who believed that farmworkers deserved better working conditions, treatment, respect, and dignity. He founded the National Farm Workers Association which used non-violent means (such as boycotts, marches, and hunger strikes) to draw the attention of the government to the plights of farmworkers. He began his civil rights movement for farmworker in 1952 after he left the U. S navy and returned to agricultural work. Through these non-violent means, Cesar was able to secure increased wages and improved working conditions for farmworkers in the United States. Before the intervention of Cesar Chavez in the welfare condition of farmworkers, farmworkers were poorly remunerated, and often unpaid. They were also denied the right to form a union or collectively bargain for their rights.

However, the significance of Cesar's fight for farmworkers is evident in the improved wages and better working conditions that followed his intervention. Also, farmers were more respected and treated with dignity, fairness, and justice. His movement also led to the enactment of the landmark legislation which guaranteed the rights of farmworkers to form a trade union and collective bargain. After his death, he was awarded a posthumous Medal of Freedom in recognition of his contribution to the advancement of the rights of farmworkers and reform in the agricultural landscape. The legacy of Cesar Chavez can be felt in every aspect of the modern labor association, especially as it related to farmworkers. He remains a great source of inspiration to many.
