    the women

    Explanation:

The Iroquois societies were matriarchal, thus the women were the ones that had the leading role. This is unusual for the North American civilizations, as the other groups of people didn't had this kind of system in place. The women in the Iroquois societies held positions of power, with the Clan Mothers being the ones that chose the leader, but also stripping the leader off its power if he/she was not ruling well. The majority of the land was owned by the women, and they were keeping the right to their land and properties even after the marriage, without having it mixed and being joint with the ones of their husbands.
