How was the Byzantine class structure divided?

    The Byzantine class was broke down into 3 classes essentially. The Upper class which was the highest level it consisted of emperors and other wealthy people. The middle class was the second tier consisting of merchants, artisans, government people. The lower class was made up of slaves and laborers and they were paid very little or nothing and had no property.
