During the early modern period, European exploration increased greatly. This allowed Europe to come into contact with other people and cultures that they had never encountered before. Of particular importance was the discovery and exploration of America.

These discoveries gave rise to increasing curiosity among the European population. Scientists wanted to study all the new plants, animals and people that were in these new places. The interest in science increased, and the subject became increasingly standardized, giving rise to the Scientific Revolution.
