The great schism occurred due to arguments between the Western Catholic church and the Eastern Orthodox church located in Constantinople. The Catholic church considered itself to be the universal church, whereas the orthodox church thought orthodox was the correct and traditional church. Both churches excommunicated each other, dividing into two different east and western churches.
