The correct answer is D. To obtain land for their families

Large numbers of American settlers move to Texas after the civil war to obtain land for their families. The land was cheap as farm and ranching enterprises expanded rapidly due to commercial production and marketing growth. By 1900, half of Texas farmers were tenants where more than 80 percent of these were either share tenants or sharecroppers. The biggest proportional increase was probably an increase in white tenants where by 1900, 47 percent were white farmers, while 69 percent of all black farmers were tenants.
