    After the passage of Missouri Compromise, otherwise known as Compromise Bill of 1820, by the then President of the United States, James Monroe. There were increased in tensions between the North and the South of the Country, as the Compromise Bill sought to have equal number of slave-holding states and free states in the country. This Compromise Bill led to Missouri becoming a Slave-holding state, while Maine was considered a free state.

    However, many political leaders at the time, including Thomas Jefferson feared and predicted that making compromises on Slavery will lead to division of the nation into North and South, and eventual civil war will be inevitable.
