Oil was first discovered in the United States in 1859 by Lewis Ross, brother of Cherokee Chief John Ross, in the old Cherokee Nation near Salina, located to the northeast of Oklahoma within the region of the High Plains. Ross accidentally hit the first vein of oil in Indian Territory when drilling for salt water. It flowed at the rate of 10 barrels a day for a year.
