2. In 1858, the Overland Mail Company founded by John Butterfield brought mail by stagecoach from Missouri to California and this took about 24 days.

3. In 1860 however, the Pony Express riders succeeded in bringing mail by horse in only 10 days.

4. And finally in 1861, the first telegraph line connected California to the East. The telegraph could send messages across the country in just a few minutes and this became the fastest mode of communication for the settlers.
